Shelley,you are absolutely correct! While I have no doubt that anti-Semitism existed it was not as the learned Prof Penslar describes it in his book...and that is what I want to point out to him!!! Cornel

I don't think it's possible to refute one man's opinion based on his personal experience with the anecdotal experience of others. The Rabbi's title certainly does not add to the validity of his views. My grandfather proudly served but died before I was born. However, my grandmother would have mentioned if he had a particularly difficult time as a Jew. The only way to refute what was quoted is to find literary references to that period and the larger picture. Many who served in the US military had very bad experiences with anti-Semitism but it doesn't mean that anti-Semitism was rampant in the US military.
