To all who may consider going to Czernowitz in the near future, do not
be put off by Bruce's memories of 1998!
(Excuse me Bruce) I was in Czernowitz both in 2003 and 2004, ate in
various places, drank the local water,
in the village of Klyvodin I also drank well water from the well which
had belonged to my great-grandfather
Mordechai Fruchter and did not get sick or have a stomach upset. In
fact, to those of you who may not know this,
one of the things which we Czernowitzers and all Bukowinians were
particularly "uppity" about, was that
we considered ourselves cleaner, (and that includes the local peasants)
than the surrounding Besarabians, Romanians,
Galitzianer and Ukrainians. Last year, the best restaurant in Czernowitz
was "Slava's" in the former Romanian officer's club.
The food and decor as well as the presentation and service would easily
compete with the best restaurants in the US or western Europe.
