Nina (and friends):

When I visited Czernowitz in 1998, food was the furthest thing from
my mind. Food "safety" was more of an issue. I made sure not to
drink from the faucet; I used only bottled water even for brushing my
teeth. I could only find bottled mineral water - not to my liking,
but safe at least.

Gaby Rinzler helped me tremendously in planning my trip and giving me
names of contacts to help once I got there. These folks helped me to
find a few restaurants, but I found that it didn't matter what they
had on the menu. You could go down a list of requests from the menu
only to be told that they didn't have those dishes that day. What
mattered most was finding out exactly what they were preparing that
day! Usually the main dish was some form of chicken - nothing
memorable - with a side of potatoes. The restaurant next to the
Armenian church had a great reputation. But the food and the wine
were hardly interesting; the wine was completely oxidized.

Anyway, I wasn't there for the food; what I remember most is the
great company I kept, the sights I saw, and the experience of walking
the streets that still looked much as they did a century ago,
cobblestones and all.

I hope the gastronomic possibilities have improved a bit since 1998!

Best regards,

Bruce
