I would like to just put forward a thought concerning the captioned. It
is this; if in fact a reunion is planned and carried out, I would urge
you in the strongest possible terms to GO TO CZERNOWITZ!
I will state at the outset that since I just returned from Czernowitz a
month ago, the chances of me joining a reunion anywhere in Europe next
year are very slim. In addition, I am aware that it will probably be
more costly, and take a greater amount of time to get to
Czernowitz. Still I urge you to GO TO CZERNOWITZ.
I believe you should do this because I feel it is very important for
the people there to realize that our interest in our ancient homeland
is also in their best interest. For us to go there, spend some money
there, will, I think help so much in our endeavors. It will help in
perhaps finding funds to maintain the synagogue, to maintain the
cemetery, to upgrade the Archives, and finally to upgrade the
facilities for tourists.
I don't have to tell you what a beautiful city Czernowitz is, and that
fortunately, it has a history of tolerance. However, we should never
take these things for granted. We should, as Jews make our presence
known, so that the entire population of the city knows that they
benefit from the presence of Jews and others, returning to the homes of
their ancestors.
I am far from religious, yet during my entire time in Ukraine I wore a
kippa. This was first a tribute to my ancestors, but I also wore it to
make all the people aware that I was there, that I was spending a
little money, and hopefully to encourage them to welcome us home!
I do not say these things to pat myself on the back, but to demonstrate
things we can do to help our situation in Czernowitz, and the
surrounding area.
For decades this wonderful place was virtually lost to us, and I am
sure we all are thrilled to have it back. Now we need to do everything
possible to make sure we do not loose it again. Let's invest in
Czernowitz in a way that will benefit everyone, both those of us who
love this place, and the residents that live there.
I urge you to consider having this reunion on the streets where our
ancestors lived. GO TO CZERNOWITZ!
