Having spent six most memorable weeks in Czernowitz in 2001, I too greatly
encourage you to choose Czernowitz. You should take the time to walk the
streets, become familiar with nooks and crannies that have not changed for
over a hundred years, take a few excursions to surrounding towns and
villages where our ancestors lived, and get to know a few elderly Jewish
people who still live in Chernivtsi (they tend gather at the Chesed
Shushana and have astounding personal stories to tell).
By the way, the higher travel costs involved will surely be offset by the
much lower costs of amenities in Ukraine than in Vienna - which can be
significant if you plan to stay for at least a week.
