[Cz-L] new on the website 8 April 05

Czernowitzers:

1. Arthur Rindner's story and 33 photographs have been added to the
website. From the menu, go to either 'Stories, Histories and Trip Reports'
or 'Post WWII Photographs' and click on Arthur's name. Click on the
thumbnails to enlarge.

2. Some time ago, while re-arranging things, I accidentally deleted the
high resolution version of the 1941 Stadtplan von Czernowitz (an excellent
detailed streetmap of the city). It is now back on the site in the
'Miscellaneous' section. At 1.4 megabytes it might take a while to download.

3. I have in my possession, a book of poems and photographs called "Der
Stein hinterm Aug": Wort und Bild aus der Bukowina put together by the
Czernowitz artist Bronislav Tutelman and list member Thomas Weggemann. The
book is written entirely in German (which I can't read). Tutelman's
excellent, sometimes alarming photographic compositions are all related to
the Czernowitz cemetery and speak without the barriers of written language.
Below I've posted some of the conversation I've had with Thomas about the
book:

Dear Jerome, many thanks for your replay.I will try to get answers to your
questions: The title"Der Stein hinterm Aug"-a stone behind the eye-is part
of a poem of by P.Celan.

The artist B.Tutelman from Czernowitz tried through art to combine the
"change between life and death" with pictures from the jewish cementary of
Czernowitz.

Bukowina in Wort und Bild: the combination with ten writers from Bukowina
with themes about the Bukowina should people remind on the culture of that
part of the world. The selection of the poems was done by Peter Rychlo from
the Cernowitzer University.

My intention with this collaboration between the artist B.Tutelman and Peter
Rychlo was to sensibilise people about the beautifulness of Bukowina and so
to start help for these people.

With the income of the book we would like to support jews on both sides of
the river Sereth: R.Guggenheim from Z¸rich supports the jewish school of
Czernowitz, I have been supporting jews in the souther part of Bukowina
(Romanie-mainly Siret and Dorohoi trough people of confidence, Synagoge and
cementary of Siret).

The goat is typical as sheeps on these cementarys- analog there is a poem of
Margul Sperber-"Judenfriedhof". [...]
