I am not sure how I came to be sent this email, but I think my grandparents
made that voyage with Michael Roll.
They - Max/Maier and Regina/Rachel Kula and Bernard/Berthold and Mina
Budabin - were also from Czernowitz, and were on a ship that, I believe,
left from Constanza for Turkey. I have the passport of Berthold/Mina.
My information, based in part on the passport, is that
- the ship broke up outside Constantinople, and that my grandfather, Max,
went into the water. The Turkish entry Visa is dated Sept 27/42
- The Turks did not want the Jews, but had to extend their temporary visa
(Nov 6/42) until they could finally be interned in Cyprus.
- I have a letter dated December 8/42 from Max from a camp in Pedoulas
telling the story of how his brother-in-law was able to get 6 work
authorizations, and other hair-raising stories.
- Max died on Cyprus in 1943.
- In Feb 44 Bernard and Mina received a visa for entry to Palestine, and
departed by air on March 1 to Beirut and thence to Lydda, where they
received a permanent entry permission from the British.
- Regina made it to Palestine later, but I do not have any documents.
- After the war, Berthold and Mina came to Canada - about 1949 ?, and
Regina a year or two later.
It would seem extremely plausible that my grandparents were shipmates of
Michael Roll. I also have many other stories and fascinating information.
All my grandparents and my parents are no longer alive. I was born in
Toronto, Canada in 1942. Both sides of my family were prosperous and were
not observant Jews. My family - from my great-great-grandparents is now
scattered - Canada, US, South America, Australia, England, France, Sweden
and - of course - Israel. I have a lot of other information and stories.
If any of you can add to my information, I would be delighted. If I can
provide anything to any of you, please make sure to ask.
