hi, have just read your email and having cogitated(lovely word!) for some
days on mimi,s last message i felt that some comments might help. firstly,i
think a reasonable number of us will descend on czernowitz on may 18 next
year. secondly, we are informed that the city council will be celebrating
600 yrs of the existence of the city...now, one of our main purposes is to
trace our families and their history in what was once the 4th biggest jewish
city in the world-;; i am also told that while there we might be invited to
an evening with the mayor etc.....ythis is todays mayor, not the soviet one
of 1945 and i am sure that he too would be horrified by posters of stalin in
the ringplatz.. no, we will certainly not shout hurrah, but i will clap my
hands ouite a lot if we can get the guy to agree to open up the city
archives to us to help in our searches, and even more if as part of the city
beautification program they agree to a cemetery cleanup. finally, the
rabbi. his whole shul is about the size of my lounge room and dining
room, and i do not live in an unusually large house! in the ukraine they do
not have the luxury of being able to have ultraorthodox ,orthodox ,
conservative or reform judaism, and having met and talked with kofmanski i
have a lot of respect for the man who is doing the best he can in not
exactly ideal cicumstances. cornel
