Cernowitzers:

I have been in contact with a Susan Sobel who suffered confusion because
she found two places called Cernivci in the Ukraine. One, of course is
our Czernowitz and the other is about 100 miles N.E. at 48.32;28.07.
She thought at first perhaps our website was for the smaller village
where her family has roots.

In the 1911 set of Austro-Hungarian maps which some of you received on
CD, the small village was then in Russia and was called Czerniewcy (Map
46-49.jpg). On a recent 'Mapquest' map of the Ukraine, both places have
exactly the same name of Cernivci.

Susan has tried contacting JewishGen researchers who were researching
the smaller Cernivci, but found their email addresses were no longer valid.

If anyone has any suggestions about researching the Czerniewcy shtetl,
you can forward them to Susan at:
susan_sobel_at_hotmail.com

I wouldn't mind being copied on what you turn up as well.

Best,
jerome
