ROMANIA AND UKRAINE, SOLVING THE PROBLEMS OF THE PAST (16.11.2007)
Print
The first plenary session of the Joint Romania-Ukraine Presidential
Committee was held during the recent visit of Ukrainian president
Viktor Iuscenko to Romania, and enjoyed the participation of both
presidents. The Committee tackled a series of bilateral problems, many
of them inherited from the past, namely the delineation of the
continental shelf and Romania's and Ukraine's economic zones in the
Black Sea, the observance of ethnic minority rights and the Krivoy Rog
steel plant, as well as more recent issues, such as the Ukrainian
authorities' building of the Bastroe navigable canal in the Danube
Delta. Looking at the statements made by the two presidents gives a
slight feeling of deja-vu. Both insist that, apart from the problems
inherited from the past, the two states have a common future to build.
However, concrete results are still being awaited. In this context, we
asked foreign policy analyst Armand Gosu how to interpret the
following statement made by President Basescu: (quote) "we have
established the diagnosis and the solutions"?(end of quote)
