I just came back from a too short a visit to Czernowitz.
The labor of Mimi Taylor, members and volunteers is nothing short of
heroic. The overgrowth has reached jungle like density. Young woods
abound in all kinds of maturation stages. Some trunks are up to 2
inches. This is not vegetation that can be simply pulled away.
Additionally many headstones are leaning perilously and will fall if
the earth around them is disturbed in any way.
I propose the creation of a voluntary fund. Those willing to
contribute will help establish a cuurrent defoliation and maintenance
fund. The cemetery is very large and I can no longer remember the
number of Hectares and most of it is still overgrown in spite of the
significant grueling labor this past summer.
The city has changed a lot from the time of our parents and
ancestors. The government spent significant amounts of money to paint
the houses and buildins of the main streets and looks rather like a
picture book village...for better or for worse.
It was still wonderful walking the same streets of my parents and grandparents.
We had an extraordinary guide, Zoya Danilowich who made our visit a
unique event with memories and realities of the city and its history,
jewish and non jewish as well.
