Greetings,
Two nice gifts for you, for those who, of course, are interested in hearing
Josef Schmidt ariasand seeing Czernowitz class photos, all courtesy of the
Museum of Family History:
For one week, I have placed on line within my Josef Schmidt page three
versions of the same song. In English, it is "My Song Goes Round the World."
In German, it is "Ein lied geht um die Welt." In French, it is "Il est un
chant d'amour." It might be interesting for you to compare both the music
and the lyrics of these three versions. The songs are in an mp3 format, so
hopefully they will play for everybody.
I will be removing these three songs in one week, sometime next Sunday,
October 23rd, and replacing them with another Schmidt aria or two, perhaps
"Una furtiva lagrima" (from "L'elisir d'amore"), or "La donna e mobile"
(from "Rigoletto.") The URL to this page is

I now have online within my "Czernowitz: Town With a Jewish Past"
exhibition, within the "Schools of Czernowitz" section, a new school photo
that may be of interest to you. It is of the Yiddish Middle School no. 3,
the 10th grade class, taken in April 1945. All of the students have been
identified, though some identifcations are lacking given names. Included in
this photo is Prof. Haim Gininger, whom some of you may know and have
admired for his skill as a teacher. He was a well-known Yiddishist. You will
also see young Gerhard Schreiber, Julius Scherzer and Meinhard (Hardy) Mayer
in this group photograph. Other surnames of students shown are Kinsbrunner,
Rosenblatt, Horer, Krauthammer, Sucher, Zwick, Morgenstern, Kapelyushnik,
Naor, Berstein, Heyman, Feuerstein, Paechter, and Rieber. The URL to this
page can be found at:

I hope this all gives you some pleasure.
Best,
Steven Lasky
