Hi Again--thank you for all your kind responses. I realize I should have written
an explanation as to the different spellings. I was given a song book when I wrote
the musical revue and it contained the following background info w/the song (see below):

" OYFN PRIPETSHOK ON THE HEARTH
Mark Warshawsky (1848-1907) has been called the Yiddish Robert Burns. Comparing
him also to Woodly Guthrie would not be far from the truth either. In his lifetime,
as also happened with the Scottish bard and the Okie balladeer, the songs of Mark
Warshawsky came to be regarded as genuine folk songs. He practiced law in Kiev-not
too successfully-while composing for his pleasure, the pleasure of his finds, songs
mirroring Russian-Jewish life as he knew it. However, it waas not until 1899 that
he began to achieve widespread recognition for his works. In that year the writer
Sholem Aleichem first heard Warshawsky's songs. He immediately recognized their
true worth and a fast friendship grew between the two men. They frequently performed
together, Sholem Aleichem reading from his works and Warshawsky singing his. In
1900 a first edition of his Ydishe Folkslider (Yiddish Folk Songs), published in
Kiev, sold out. Warshawsky dreamed of going to America and performing his material
there, but he never did. In 1918, Sholem Aleichem brought out the second edition
of Yidishe Folkslider in New York"

I used to play this song at Jewish gatherings and the people started singing through
their tears. I discovered that hardly any of my friends knew it and that
it provides a clue to your ancestry's home in the old country.

Best Wishes,

Jeanne Blitzer Andelman
