Dear Joanna and members of the list,
Tempting as it may be, to collect money for the restoration
and maintenance of the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery,
from both members of this list and anyone who considers
such restoration and maintenance an important "Mitzvah",
I would like to suggest, that we refrain from doing this,
until we have a clear plan of what needs to be done
and how we are going to do it.
Christian Hermann, Sasha Wolloch and I have been researching
and gathering information about the legal status of the cemetery,
the probable cost of clearing it of weeds and invasive vegetation,
the best means of maintaining it, the organizations and experts
who might help us with both advice and funds, the aid and assistance
we can expect from the city government and many other aspects of
the restoration and maintenance of the cemetery.
At this point our research is incomplete, but we expect to have
a provisional plan including the collection and disbursement
of funds ready this coming spring, by which time we shall present
it for approval to the list.
Whether it is this plan or another which will be found to be most
likely to succeed, we can then establish an organization to carry
it out and start collecting the necessary funds.
In the meantime, it is fairly certain that SVIT Ukraine will hold
two work-camps in Chernivtsi this coming summer in order to continue
the work, which was started last summer.
The cost of last summer's work-camp was borne mostly by SVIT Ukraine
and by the volunteers themselves. Christian and I, both contributed
small sums. I will obtain information on how those who would like to
contribute towards next summer's work-camps could do so by sending
their contributions directly either to SVIT Ukraine, or SCI Germany.
