I am in total agreement with Joanna Liss on the enjoyment derived from read=
ing Phil Katz's mini-memoir.  This sharing of experiences of survival m=
akes fascinating reading.  I wish that in my youth I had run less and a=
sked to be told more within my own family since I now have all sorts of ques=
tions with none of the family still around to provide the answers.

My aunt Hilda and her husband, Julius Gutmann and my cousin, Turi (all dead=
now)  and some 40 other families apparently traded with the authoritie=
s all their possessions for a small ship with holes in it to get to Palestin=
e.  The ship sank off Turkey but no lives were lost.  All I recall=
is that within hours of getting to the shore, Hilda found a sewing machine =
and started working, repairing torn clothes, alterations, whatever.

I have no idea how they left Turkey but they were intercepted by the Britis=
h and put in a camp in Cyprus where, apparently, they enjoyed themselves gre=
atly, studied English, took part in plays, etc.  I have a snapshot=
of the three of them on Cyprus in 1943 thus their exodus from Romania would=
have been between 1940 and '42.  They would have been among the first =
to enter Palestine legally but I have no dates or details.  There is a =
statue of a boat near the beach in Tel Aviv  that commemorates a s=
imilar arrival but I checked for names, and it wasn't the same.

If anyone has any information about that ship and the 40 families that ende=
d in Cyprus, I would be grateful to hear about it.
All the best,
Andy Halmay
