Subject: [Cz-L] RECONCILEMENT
In Yddish it was "Iberbeten".
Even the best friends ,a times ,quarelled and then they
became "boese". This meant they were not on talking terms.
The term comes from German where it means "mean" - in
Czernowitz it meant to be cross.
This happened betwen the best of friends and was
quite fashionable.
After some time, with the intervention of friends,
it was decided to end this situation and to arrange
a reconcilement. In Yiddish this meant "Iberbeten".
There even was a song on this subject and it went
like this:
Lomir sich iberbeten ( Lets make it up)
Shtey nisht bei der Tir,( Dont stand by the door)
Lomir sich iberbeten,
Kim aher zi mir ( Come on close to me)
and so on for some 46 relevant verses, all on the
point that the time is ripe for making it up.
But not so fast : first came a ceremony- you
met at a specially arranged meeting then you
stood in front of the other party ,hooked your
small finger with that of your partner an together
recited that song :
" Rigale rigale roighes ( no meaning- for the rhyme)
Ze-mir gewesen broyges ( we have been cross).
Rigale rigale rick ( see above- no meaning)
Ze- mir fraind zurick ( we are friends again)".
Then the real celebration started.
