RE: [Cz-L] The joys of Yiddish

My grandmother Rosa Mueller (born Stern) used to use many Ukrainian words, =
here are some:
Perepolokha ("er hot bakimmen die peropolokha") = alarmed, to be startled=
, to be shocked.
Parshoin = traveler (usually someone arriving somewhere on a boat or a tr=
ain)
Strashen = (from Uk. "strakh") to intimidate, to frighten...and there is =
this beautiful saying she used to cynically say for: "don't threaten me": "s=
trashet nisht die genz", coming from the farmers market, where the Ukrainian=
 farmer-woman warned the customers not to frighten her geese, that she broug=
ht to the market to sell.
sratchke = diarrhea (coming from sraka = behind, ass)
pellekhate = neglected, uncombed
chupp (pronounced like "loup")= forelock...hence the famous word "chupchi=
k"
kharken = to gurgle, to bubble, to cough
a zibale (the "z" pronounced like in zion) = a preemie (premature baby). =
not Ukrainian but beautiful: a baby born on the seventh month of pregnancy (=
seven = sieben in German)

To add to Mimi's contribution:
na viru - means also a couple living together without marriage
smarkatch - is the smarkate's husband...
smarken - is the verb: to have a running nose
