Hi All,
Please check out the link below.

In light of the discussion about the cemetery project I thought you would
find this interesting. I'm not sure if any of you have seen it. It was given
to me last week by a man who helps find graves for people in the Cemetery.
He was quite a pest actually and bothered Zoya morning and night regarding
our search for my family graves at the cemetery. His price was $100 per
grave if he found it. Can you imagine? The average salary is $200/month. We
were very lucky and ended up finding four out of six graves on our own. The
map and information we received from Bruce were indispensable. The
information from the woman who is the administrator was almost worthless.
We had to borrow an ax to cut down the trees that were growing around the
graves. My husband brought a folding saw and garden gloves with him which
really came in handy. As soon as I get my photos together I will be sharing.
We had the privilege of attending the Popovici ceremony. You all would have
been so proud of Mimi Taylor's efforts. The event was very well attended
with dignitaries from the Ukraine and Romania who all made very nice
speeches. We have footage of the event and will be sharing as soon as we
clean it up.
This was my first trip to Czernowtiz and it was very productive. Because of
Zoya Danilovich's contacts in the archives and my relationship with Vadim
Altscan from the National Holocaust Museum, I was able to gain access to
birth and property records at the Regional Oblast as well as obtain
information about my grandfather who was deported to Siberia in 1945. My
mother has been looking for information about my grandfather since his
arrest in 1945. We had to go to the SBU (Secret Police Archives) and the
former KGB building. Oye! Such drama. We're making a movie of our experience
and our journey that included my father's roots in Lvov as well so you'll
see it all sooner than later.
If any of you are interested in gaining access to information Zoya's help is
indispensable. In addition, I did a great deal of research before I left. I
sent the information about my family before my arrival and the information
was waiting for us. We actually had the original record books from the early
1800s in our hands. This was quite interesting to see. Everything was hand
written in German because it was from the Austro-Hungarian times. The
details were incredible down to the doctor who delivered the baby and the
moile who did the snip snip.
I saw where my mother was born and lived until she left Czernowitz. It was
all very emotional. My family connections to Czernowitz go back to the early
1800s and some of the places they lived look almost the same.
There's no question that the cemetery is in trouble. I took pictures of some
of the graves that have been vandalized as well as the destruction the
vegetation has caused the existing stones. As soon as I sort them out I will
share. The link to the video shows other issues as well.
Thanks to all of you that helped me on my journey.
Sincerely,
Ilana Gordon
