Sorry Miriam, Zuversicht does mean confidence.
And Silviu, yes, many of us are nostalgic for the old way of life (pre WW2)
of Czernowitz or "Jewish Czernowitz". By this we do not mean the
anti-Semitic regime of Romania, nor the poverty of some of the inhabitants
of Czernowitz, but the interest in "Kultur", in a better way of life and in
a certain civility.
Even now, when I visit Czernowitz, I am impressed with the Volksgarten, the
sunken garden in front of the theatre, the garden-like setting of the insane
asylum, the beautiful public buildings and some of the apartment buildings,
in Jugendstiel and Bauhaus style.
In addition, I am convinced that our daily speech and manner of expressing
ourselves, was very rich and colorful. You certainly could not nuance and
express such a variety of meanings in one language, as we did in our mixture
of German, Yiddish, Ukrainian and occasional Romanian.
