It's funny that you mention the snobbish residents of the central part of
the town.

The same situation continued during the Soviet times. We felt a strong sense
of superiority towards the Jews of the "Volgogradskaya" (the lower part) who
spoke Yiddish at home, were less educated, attended the less prestigious
schools, and their Russian was heavily accented.
