The reason that despite numerous work-camps and work
paid for by CJCRO, the cemetery is still in such bad shape
is largely due to type of vegetation which grows in the cemetery.
This vegetation consists of: Annual weeds, various sorts of vines
and invasive types of trees.
Each of these types of plants requires different treatment in order
to stop its spread and growth.

Annual weeds are spread by seeds which are brought by the wind,
therefore hard to control permanently. But while some of them,
like burning nettles cause skin allergic reactions, these plants
do not endanger the graves or gravestones.

The vines at the cemetery; Vinca, English Ivy, Hops, etc.
damage the gravestones and make the cemetery impassable.
They spread by both seeds and runners and can only be eliminated
by killing their roots with herbicides and by repeated spraying of new
plants introduced by seeds brought by the wind once a year.

The trees at the cemetery are mostly invasive species, they multiply
by seeds and or by new shoots sent out by their roots. They include:
Norway maple, Black Locust (Robinia), Chinese tree of Heaven etc.
These trees have to be cut and their root system immediately killed
by means of herbicides. If their roots are not killed, they send out
multiple shoots for every tree cut.
The wind is likely to introduce new seeds and the trees growing
from these would have to be eradicated once every three years.

The problem has been that the cemetery employees did not spray
the stumps of the cut vegetation properly when they should have done so.
The workers hired by CJCRO have refused to use the herbicides at all.
The volunteers from SVIT Ukraine have only occasionally been willing
to spray herbicide solution on some plants.

The herbicide used by both the cemeteries administration and volunteers
is what in the US is called "Round-up".
This herbicide is permitted for use both in the US, by the EU
and by the Ukrainian authorities.
It does not harm the ground-water, does not affect animal life
and does not prevent seeds from sprouting.
I use it in my large garden and it is effective in killing unwanted
vegetation,
does no harm to birds and squirrels nor has it affected me or my
husband.

This herbicide has been used effectively by the volunteers of ASF
Germany
by brushing it to the freshly cut stumps of trees and bushes, which
are then
covered with plastic bags, so that the herbicide will not dry too
fast, nor be
washed off too soon by rain.

This method of applying the herbicide is time consuming,
but much more effective and much more economical in the use of
herbicides.

True that most of us who want to restore and preserve the Jewish
cemetery
in Czernowitz/Chernivtsi are old and possibly not very agile physically.
But if we hired local workers to cut the vegetation and we only
applied the herbicide
we could effectively clear the cemetery in about 10 days.
