The Schnurrbart is a purr- or hum beard, not a stringbeard. At least that
is the way it is written in German.
It has some tenths of varieties as can easily be seen on the net. Origin of
name? I would go for the cat similarity.
First the place of the hair formed (the literal name is Oberlippenbart) is
associated to the domesticated species that has it most pronounced (the
Cat) and then the nearness of the sound origin and the look of it are
associated by metonymy. That
is a standard process in most live languages.

Did the pupils of the Aron Pumnul gymnasium like the Schnurrb=E4rte of the
driving school teachers', posing vis a vis their place of learning, more
than their own teachers'? That is here the question!
