by Zentralinstitut der Sprachwissenschaft Berlin, (1.
Edition 1989, ISBN 3-05-000626-9),
"Schnurrbart" also "Schnauzbart" derives from the old Low German term =
"snurre"=3D mouth / snout.

  It has some tenths of varieties as can easily be seen on the net. =
Origin of name? I would go for the cat similarity.
  First the place of the hair formed (the literal name is =
Oberlippenbart) is associated to the domesticated species that has it =
most pronounced (the Cat) and then the nearness of the sound origin and =
the look of it are associated by metonymy. That
  is a standard process in most live languages.

  Did the pupils of the Aron Pumnul gymnasium like the Schnurrb=E4rte of =
the driving school teachers', posing vis a vis their place of learning, =
more than their own teachers'? That is here the question!
