With a bit more sleuthing, I located this post on an Ancestry.ca
discussion board, in response to a question about Derelui:
"I am from the area you are interested in. Yet, I am almost sure that it
is not about 20 km. south ov Tschernivtsi city, but about 2 km. east of
the city's outskirts. The village is now called Ostritsa, and only a part
of it is called Derelui or Pesderelui (shortcut of 'Peste Derelui' - over
the Derelui.
I suppose, you think that the village Derelui must be located at the
spring of the Derelui river. Yet, it is located at its mouth, where
Derelui flows into the Prut River. And around 3 000 people live in the
village Ostritsa, or Ostrytsya in translation from Ukrainian.”
