Dear Edgar, Raul and All,
Thanks for the information (however discouraging) regarding records.

I sent my request pertaining to the Archives (for records from Czernowitz and Volchinets—now Stary Vovchynets), addressed to the director, via Zoya Danielovich, who will be my guide. Within a day or two she was informed there are no records for Stary Vovchynets, but supposedly someone is looking into ones for Czernowitz. Perhaps Zoya has a particular connection? Or nothing is actually being done? I realize ultimately I may not receive anything (even if something exists), but for the moment I’ll remain optimistic.
Best,
Lesli

The former director Dmytro Zhmundulyak was dismissed and is currently under criminal investigations due to serious corruption allegations. Therefore the currently appointed director - a non-specialist - acts more than cautious, to put it charitably. He puts temporarily each and any request from abroad on the shelf and doesn't take any decision without the consent of the security service.
