To answer your question I'll use some prose my son wrote:
"It's a variety of reasons, ranging from the emotional to the practical.
Foremost, our grandfather (to whom both me and my mother were very
close, and admire enormously) always felt that he was an Austrian Jew,
and to some extent, going through this process feels like a way of
honoring him and identifying ourselves with him.

More broadly, Germany and Austria making provisions to return
