<x-flowed>Dear Friends:

Some of you may be interested to know about recent developments in
southern Bukovina. Here is a brief summary.

1. Under the leadership of Bondy Stenzler, Alex Rath, Nomi Weber,
Eli Brender, Shlomo Steinmetz and Ruth Enis (all from Israel), and
Sylvie Gsell of France, efforts are underway to photograph and
preserve the Jewish cemetery of Radauti, Romania. Visit these web
sites for important information about this project:

http://www.geocities.com/bondashku/

http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/radauti/cimitiralbum/

It's very interesting to note the following comment from the first
web site above:

"Burial ground since 1831 for the Jewish communities of Radautz and
its surroundings: Putna, Arbore, Solca, Brodina etc."

2. As the project proceeds, the same group is also interested in
similar efforts to preserve nearby cemeteries in Suceava, Siret and
elsewhere.

3. The group has appealed for help to fund the Radauti project,
according to an article published in the January 2005 issue of Die
Stimme. The article appears here in English:

http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/radauti/cimitiralbum/stimme.htm

4. Rita Stenzler Rogers, retired physician of California, published
an autobiographical book in 1988. Written jointly with John Mack,
the Alchemy of Survival, One Woman's Journey, starts with her
comments on growing up in Radauti in the 1920s and 30s. Dr. Rogers
has given permission for the posting of book excerpts on the Radauti
ShtetLinks web site. The first installment appears here:

http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/radauti/alchemy.htm

If you've read this far, I have a question for you. Are the doors to
the archives in Romania still closed for foreign research (per orders
of the minister who overseas the archives), or have they been
re-opened? Please let me know if you have knowledge of the situation
at the Regional Archives in Suceava.

With best wishes,

Bruce
