Dear Czernowitzers,
This is probably not be the best time for what I am about to write.
While Israel may be on the brink of another war, I am sure most of you
are too worried and preoccupied to have patience for much else.
But if any of you find refuge from worry in being active, I would like
to suggest that you search the internet and the reference libraries for
information about these subjects:
1. According to Ukrainian law, who has legal ownership of the "Tempel"?
The memorial hall next to the cemetery and the cemetery itself?
I believe that private buildings are being returned to the heirs
of the pre-war owners, what about buildings which were owned by a
religious community?
2. The "Tempel" was set on fire by the Romanians and Czernowitz is
recognized as under the sphere of influence of German Culture.
Are either Germany or Romania, legally obligated to restore the building?
3. I believe that UNESCO gives financial aid for the restoration of
buildings which are declared to be part of "World Heritage". How does one
obtain their help and intervention.
Even if you cannot devote time to this research now, please keep it in mind,
for when you can. We need to know the facts and adopt a practical attitude.
All the best,
Mimi
