Greetings,
Here are other new Czernowitz pages on my site that might be of interest to
you:
"The Rabbis and their Prayer Houses," about Rabbi Mark.
www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/mfh-rabbis-ph-czernowitz.htm
"The First World War: The Jews in Bukowina (1914-1919) -- World War and
Russian Occupation"
www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/mfh-wwI-czernowitz.htm
"Aliyot: Returning to the Promised Land"
by Anny Matar
www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/mfh-aliyot-matar.htm
You've already read by page on the Jewish orphanage/OSE, announced a while
back.
Lastly, I am learning a lot as I transcribe the Scherzer lecture. It reminds
me of the great impact of the spoken voice, or at least the greater effect
of hearing or reading first-hand accounts, when learning about our Jewish
history. Hearing Prof. Scherzer's voice, its timbre, watching his body
language, speaking with him, had a more effective impact on me than if I was
to simply read various general accounts of the historical events that
enveloped Czernowitz.
To extrapolate this point a bot, I am also reminded how important first-hand
accounts are in reaching (and teaching) people, especially when one is
present when the accounts are being given. This is why I would encourage all
of you who might have lived in Europe (or for that matter anywhere) during
these times, to talk to your children and grandchildren (assuming they are
willing to pay attention) about your lives while it is still possible, in
whatever terms you think appropriate.
In lieu of, or in addition to that, may I suggest you get a good tape
recorder and record your own story. This could be for the time when your
children and/or grandchildren might actually be interested (if they are not
already), not to mention for posterity. Anybody that wishes to make a
recording about their early years in Czernowitz are welcome to send copies
of these accounts to me too if they wish. Really, everybody's story is
important.
Best,
Steve Lasky
