Ilana,
If you go to
http://www.ibiblio.org/yiddish/Places/Czernowitz/Fichman/
and click on chapter 16, What's in a Name, you can read about issues
and problems of this sort around 'naming' and the legal recognition of
marriage in Bukovina, as told by my mother, Pearl Spiegel Fichman, as
it pertained to her family.

Subject: [Cz-L] Birth Certificate
I recently came upon my grandfather's birth certificate. He was born in
1891 in Kiselitze. There is a box on the certificate regarding marital
status of the parents. It says that my grandfather was "illegitimate".
Knowing that his father was quite religious, I am assuming the the
issuers
of the certificate were Kiselitze officials and there was no civil
ceremony recorded [only a rabbinical one].
Does anyone on this list have information regarding customs at this time
in Bukovina?
