Hi Hardy, Jerry and all,

My father was a regular customer at the Roemerbad and took me along (in the
late 1930th) at least once a week. The owner Gustav Gedaly
was his best friend, and actually later during the war and the Russian year
1944/5 they stayed with us for about 2 years as living space was scarce
and you had to divide larger apartments to at least two families.

Before of course, during the Ghetto, we stayed with them. I was looking for
Ilana's mother (Vicki) for some 50 years and now at last got connected
through
Ilana's mail to Ehpes. Long talk, long distance, yesterday.

I don't know about you - my memories about the Schwitzbad are linked to the
small Faier restaurant located opposite it at the cellar level. Faier had
the best
parjoale in town and also my preferred Gansleber la gratar (grill). It was
commonly accepted at Faier's not to call for Knoblauch (garlic) as an
addition to the meat
but to ask for "vanilie". Not that the smell was in any way influenced by
this change in name. The few steps down from the pavement level have now
disappeared and so has the entrance to the location.

My father's Masseur was Vasile and mine was his younger brother Gheorghe who
was more gentle than his older brother and
did not break any bones. I liked everything there except the Trockenschwitz
I.e. the sauna, but got used to it because of the goose liver reward that
came after it.

Berti
