My mother told me that Mondays were ladies day. My grandmother and her
friends, Mrs. Glaubach, Mrs. Koerner and Mrs. Luttinger, would take the day
off and go to the bath. No men were allowed for obvious reasons. She
mentioned that they had the best pickled herring which was the treat of the
day.
During the Russian times my grandfather used to come home with sacks of
money from the Russian soldiers. Thousands and thousands of ruebels
basically worth nothing.
On a more somber note, one day there was a rumor that the Russians were
looking for young girls to round them up for prostitution and my mother and
her friend slept in the bathtubs thinking it would be a good hiding spot.
