Dear Fred,
You write :
" I never had the pleasure of meeting Hardi, though I am now
convinced that he must have been an exceptionally clean young man, "
Oy, are you wrong.
I'll tell you why :
In 1942 the city stopped the electricity because of the war effort.
Illumination was by kerosene lamps. As these had glass cylinders that
frequently broke and there was no replacement (see war effort) these
were
soon replaced by what we called Kanetzl.
A Kanetzl was a small glass bottle , filled with naphta (kerosene) with
a wick.
At night we lit this and the light that came out of this was very dim.
What did come out of it was naphta smell and soot , lamp black.
After a short while the room was filled with black flags of soot that
settled everywhere.
In the eyes ,nostrils ,ears and on everything else.
One morning waking up I looked at my brother and got the scare of my
life.
Al Joelson blackface.
Soot wouldn't come off easy and soap was also scarce..
This was just one reason why I was not exceptionally clean...
There were others, but this another story.
Hardy
