This topic of Czernowitzer deutsch, Yiddish, Hoch deutsch, Hebrew etc. is
terrific. With this song, I see that some things continue through the
generations into 4 or 5 tongues!
Surely I am not the only American who learned this song in English!
We had hand signals for "my" "hat" "3" "corners" and would become silent fo=
r
a word each time around, cumulatively until the song had become mostly mime
with a few "my's".
It was my impression that it referred to Haman [of Megillah Esther fame]'s
3-cornered hat but I was just a child so maybe that is not so.
Also, re: Hocht Mir nicht in Tshinech - I understand this to mean "Don't
rattle my tea kettle" aka "Don't bother me." Used often as was "Fardrei
dein ein kopf" translates to "Go twist [spin] your own head" aka "Don't mak=
e
me crazy." [Please pardon my terrible Yiddish spelling.]
Best regards,

Eduard & Gabriele,
Always thought this was a Hebrew song:
Lakova sheli shalosh pinot, shalosh pinot lakova sheli
V'im lo hayu lo shalosh pinot - lo haya ze hakova sheli
And again in English: My hat has three corners, three corners has my
hat,....and if he wouldn't have three corners, then it wouldn't be my hat.
