*Dear Czernowitzers,

I'm sharing with you a compilation of info several listserv members
were good enough to share with me in response to my questions
concerning hotels and distances in Ukraine for my upcoming trip to
Czernowitz ... Thank you again to all who generously responded and I
look forward to continuing to communicate with many of you!*

/As I recall, from Lviv to Czernowitz is about 6 hours driving. The
in-between places are roughly an hour or so apart. But it depends on how
often you have to stop on the way for a flock of geese waddling along or a
slow-moving cow or a horse-drawn wagon... It is all very picturesque and
will make you feel as though you have stepped back a few centuries. Enjoy
and happy travels./

/Cheremosh is the newest hotel in Czernovitz and could be the best one
however its location is a bit awkward in my opinion, its way away from
downtown and at least half an hour ride on the trolley bus, the other
hotel that I would recommend is called Bukowina, its right on the main
street in front of the central park Kalinin, or as it was called 16
years ago and a Czernovitz soccer stadium/sporting complex, also
probably about 20-30 minute walk from downtown, walking right on the
main street. Hotel Cheremosh is located more on the outskirts of the
city surrounded by the soviet style housing blocks, that look like
projects in US, so not of the nicest neighborhoods but it has a nice
view because it located near a small park and a pond, and also is on top
of a hill. Hotel Bukowina is one of the oldest hotels in modern
Chernovitz but its location is much better than Cheremosh, in the
neighborhood that was build by Romania or Austria, while Cheremosh is
much newer and more high tech, also more popular because of that, so I
guess its a tough decision you'll have to make, personally I would lean
towards hotel Bukowina, its also located in a safer neighborhood where
you can just go out and walk around, instead of relying on
transportation all the time.this is the English website of hotel
Bukowina: http://www.hotel.cv.ua/eng/index_eng.html _ _

other hotels in Czernovits, I googled it and heres what I found,

/I think it took us about five hours to drive from Ternopil to Lviv.
Try the following web:
http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm
this will give you all the distances, (hotels, restaurants not in the
Ukraine).

Most of your questions can probably be answered by a woman name of
Anna Wiesmeyer. She is originally from Czernowitz and now lives in
Germany and runs a so-called Ukraina travel. She organised my trip,
organised a driver and guides in Czernowitz and was very good at
answering
all my questions before I traveled. I also know that Czernowitz
airport which started life as an Austro-Hungarian fighter base in WWI
and was closed for years has now reopened but I have no idea where
flights go. By western standards the prices of what Anna W. organised
were dirt cheap. For those of us who have seen Topol, Fiddler On The
Roof...... a short drive on the Czernowitz-L'viv road and those
villages are still there but now populated by Ukrainians, Poles,
Rumanians etc, no Jews. but as in the show, water still comes from a
well in the front yard and a couple of men pull the plow and the
rest of the family is behind planting the potatoes or whatever.
However, if you contact Anna you should have all your questions
answered easily! her email is ukraina-travel_at_web.de on the
internet: www.ukraina-travel.de and her fax is ++49(0)171/7342158/

*And from my guide while I'm in Ukraine ...*

/I agree that traveling in Ukraine is different from the one in the
USA. First, it concerns the time we cover distances. The distance
from Lviv to Ternopil is about 120km and it takes about 2.5 hours to
cover it. And I think it is really wise to stay in Ternopil for a
night and then travel to Chernivtsi. There is a strong argument for
this - the distance from Lviv to
Chernivtsi is 280 Km and it is really far. So I think that the best
way to do your trip is as
follows:

1. Friday: arriving to Lviv, having rest and breakfast
there and way to Ternopil. In Ternopil I think we will
have some time to have excursion there and then stay
for a night.

2. Saturday: go to Chernivtsi, enjoy staying in this
beautiful town and stay there overnight.

3. Sunday: trip to Kolomaya and then returning to
Ternopil to take bus to Krakow. I would not recommend
you to return to Lviv since it is very far.

/*I hope this is useful to members of this listserv - let me know ...
Best wishes,
Nina
