miriam....i totally understand what you are saying and why .yet i must also
say that some of what you say just is not so. there was a steady stream of
czernowitzers going to vienna,on holidays,on business,to visit relatives etc
. also academics of whom many were jewish from vienna and czernowitz
universities went on exchange visits as did many of their students.
yes,there was antisemitism,but the jewish burschenschaften carried sabers
and gave as good as they got. in czernowitz we had for example the
brothers of hebronia and similar were to be found in vienna. during ww1 when
the russians came a very large no of jews fled.....and where most went was
vienna. and i have another reason why i go. in ivrit there is a word that i
yhink is probably derived from jiddish and the word is dafka. its hard to
translate,the closest is probably "just because" -- but it means doing
whatever in spite of everything. i am a jew,i spent years wearing an
israeli uniform and i will go to these places just to show that in spite of
all we are still here and we go where we please!!! cornel
