I checked those history books I have at home and could find no mention
of fighting in Czernowitz on June 29th or at any other time during
the entrance of the Russians into the Bukovina. It would be interesting
to find out from whom the Associated Press, got this information.
Was this first published in Romanian newspapers?
Might this have been in reaction to the premature entrance of Soviet
forces into Bucovina?

Radu Ioanid in his book "The Holocaust in Romania", on page 38 writes:

The Romanian forces were given three days to withdraw, but the Soviets
did not respect even this term, entering the country and undertaking
their first arrests before June 29.

I was wrong in writing earlier that the newspaper-clips were all accurate.
I also mistakenly compared the low temperatures of the winter of 1940-41,
with the winter of 1932 mentioned in these clips.

The article from the Chicago Daily Tribune about banning Yiddish
from being spoken in public places is correct and so is the article
about seizing "Reds".

I wonder whether the article about the more than a 100 year old woman,
Miriam Schweitzer who died on Oct. 13th, 1932, is correct.
Possibly Bruce would check the copies of the Burial registers.
